In light of recent Twitter shenanigans, a few friendly reminders:
- It is fine to love and stan a musician or other celebrity who has said or done problematic shit.
- It is not, however, okay to make excuses for their problematic behavior or pretend it isn’t problematic at all.
- (For example, cosplay does not justify Yesung’s blackface selca. Race and gender can be flexible in cosplay, but the history of blackface is undeniably one of promoting blatantly racist archetypes. Blackface is problematic. Period. End of story.)
- It is also not okay to attack other people for liking problematic celebrities.
- Acknowledging and civilly discussing problematic behaviors is constructive and informative and can benefit both fan and celebrity.
- Harassment and hate and hot tempers, on the other hand, solve nothing.
- If you harass or wish death or bodily harm on Yesung or [insert problematic celebrity here], you are an asshole.
- If you claim what Yesung or [insert problematic celebrity name here] did was not problematic, you need to recognize that your idol is not infallible.
- Celebrities are ordinary people with good PR.
- People make mistakes.
- We can hold people accountable for their mistakes without being utter buttmunches about it.
